Laurel Highlands Scenic Ride Series

About this event

Welcome to the Laurel Highlands!

The Laurel Highlands Scenic Ride Series will focus on the beautiful scenic landscape in the area around Ligonier, PA.

This ride is for moderate level riders who do not mind waiting at turns for others. All riders should come expecting to WAIT AT TURNS. We will keep rolling if we see everyone at the turns unless otherwise specified by the ride leader. We will adhere to this policy for each ride.

The terrain can be challenging at times, but we are planning to start out early rides with some gentler slopes and less climbing, then as we make our way into the summer months. We are also planning to offer multiple route options and are looking into some alternatives that include mixed-surface and gravel. More on that later in the year!

About This Month's Route

This is mostly a road ride, but there is about 1.5 miles of hard-packed gravel road along Love Hollow, as you approach the turn onto Thatcher Road. The condition on a dry day, is what you are probably familiar with if you do any trail riding. There is some lose gravel, but it can be avoided in most cases. The terrain is gently rolling, but predominantly a gradual downhill grade. You will want to think about a wider tire — maybe 28mm or more. You don't need to have a gravel bike just for this small section of the ride and you will find the forest scenery in this section to be worth the effort!

Our starting location does offer riders that may want to explore Linn Run the opportunity to stop at their car to refuel, shed clothes, or make a quick stop to use the facilities. Some riders might enjoy the lower part of the climb into the Linn Run State Park where the grade does not exceed 3% before making their way back to their car. You can also challenge yourself with a climb to the top (~1500ft of elevation in 7 miles) and be rewarded with a long, flowing descent back to the parking area.
